General Motors Recalls 62,500 Chevrolet Silverado Trucks Over Brake Fire Risk

GM Recall Alert: Silverado Trucks Face Brake Fire Risk
General Motors (GM) has issued a recall for more than 62,500 Chevrolet Silverado trucks in the U.S. after identifying a fire hazard linked to a faulty brake pressure sensor. The recall affects certain 2024-2025 Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD models.
The announcement, made on June 26, 2025, warns owners of a potential short circuit in the brake sensor that could ignite the brake fluid, causing engine compartment fires, even when the vehicle is parked and turned off.
🔍 Affected Vehicles
According to GM and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall includes:
-
2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD
-
2024 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD
-
2025 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD
-
2025 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD
Both gasoline and diesel variants are affected.
🔥 What’s the Risk?
At the center of the issue is the brake pressure sensor that may leak fluid onto an adjacent electronic control unit, leading to:
-
Short-circuits
-
Smoke or engine bay fires
-
Fires that may occur even when the vehicle is parked and unattended
General Motors has already received reports of 21 incidents, including smoke, melting, and three confirmed engine fires—though thankfully, no injuries or crashes have been reported so far.
“We are acting out of an abundance of caution to protect our customers,” GM stated in a release.
🧑🔧 What Silverado Owners Should Do
General Motors has issued the following guidance:
-
Check your VIN using NHTSA’s recall tool
-
If affected, visit your dealership immediately
-
Dealers will install a new wiring harness with an inline fuse, free of charge
-
Until the fix is made, General Motors advises parking outside and away from structures
Owners will start receiving official recall notification letters by mid-July 2025.
🏁 GM’s Recall History: Not the First Time
This isn’t GM’s first major recall involving the Silverado. In 2022, over 680,000 Silverados were recalled for potential airbag and seatbelt sensor issues. The company is under increasing pressure from watchdogs to improve quality control on its heavy-duty truck lines.
